Here are some Costa Brava hotels that are on the seafront or close to the sea, that have gourmet restaurants or that are surrounded by vines. They’re all ideal places to spend a weekend or your holidays and head off to unspoilt, unique spots on the coastline.
From Alt to Baix Empordà, stopping off at hotels, restaurants and marvellous beaches on the way
BAIX EMPORDÀ’S CHARM
As the month of June approaches, rice planting begins in the beautiful rice fields in Pals. The village itself is full of restaurants where you can sample this local dish and this is where you’ll find the gourmet hotel Es Portal, tucked away in a peaceful setting in the heart of the Empordanet. A bit closer to the beaches and coves of Begur, Tamariu and Llafranc, we recommend the Hotel del Teatre, with its restaurant La Calèndula, in the former theatre of the medieval village of Regencós.
If you prefer to go as far as Begur, Hostal Sa Rascassa will give you a warm welcome and make you feel at home. It’s set in the small cove of Aiguafreda and has a restaurant specialising in Mediterranean cuisine. Both Begur and Pals are considered to be among the most charming villages on the Costa Brava. Every September, the former comes alive with its popular Indianos Fair recreating the atmosphere of 19th-century Begur, while in Pals every spring you have the chance to experience rice planting first-hand.
For true foodies, various restaurants in Calella de Palafrugell serve cremat, flambéed coffee laced with rum, a typical drink for long summer nights on the Costa Brava. Still in Calella, a stone’s throw from the main beach, the Hotel Alga welcomes new visitors every year and is a great base for visiting the whole coastline of the Empordà at your own pace.
ALT EMPORDÀ’S CHARM
Within easy reach of the beaches of Alt Empordà, as well as the beautiful scenery and great DO Empordà wines, you can enjoy the gourmet cuisine served by the team led by Xavier Sagristà and Toni Gerez, the Michelin-starred chef and maître at Castell Peralada restaurant. Break with routine, book a table, visit the Castell de Perelada winery and stay near the restaurant, at Hotel Peralada, where you can also relax and unwind with the different treatments provided by its Wine Spa.
Halfway between Roses, Cadaqués, El Port de la Selva and Portlligat, you’ll find Mas Lazuli restaurant, wellness centre and luxury hotel, where the hotel can include a visit to its olive groves and vineyards.
On spring and summer evenings you can observe the stunning sunsets from Cala Jóncols hotel, in the secluded setting of this beautiful cove in the municipality of Roses, whose restaurant specialises in seafood cuisine. It’s within easy reach of one of the most popular beaches in the summer months, Canyelles beach, where you’ll find Hotel Canyelles Platja and its restaurant Draulic, which delights even the most demanding gourmets with its tasting menu and varied à la carte menu based on local seasonal produce.
In Alt Empordà, if you haven’t been there yet, don’t miss a visit to Cadaqués … We recommend trying restaurant Compartir’s delicious haute cuisine and staying overnight at the exclusive little hotel Villa Gala, with its exceptional views of what many people consider to be the most beautiful village in Catalonia.
